The Women's Forum for the Economy & Society together with the French Embassy in Myanmar, will organize a Special Regional Edition in Yangon on 6-7 December 2013, in concertation with the Ministry of Social Welfare Relief and Resettlement of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar and with the exceptional participation of Daw Ang San Suu Kyi.
The topic will be "Women in a fast opening society". It will be the first time such a conference is organized in Myanmar. Women coming from different local circles – politics, businesses, culture, NGOs – both officials – government and parliament – and civil society will join with women from overseas to discuss issues relating to women's visions of national transition in a global environment. It will be a unique opportunity to create bridges and enhance future cooperation between participants, in order to contribute to gender equality and women’s empowerment.
On 28 June 2012 the Women's Forum was honored to convene a dinner for Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, the Burmese human rights leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate. The dinner featured some 50 European women leaders in politics, business and civil society, and was the last official engagement (and sole private dinner) in Daw Aung San Suu Kyi 's historic 16-day tour of Europe, which mobilized enthusiastic crowds across Switzerland, Norway, Ireland, Britain and France. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi spoke about the key role that women played in her struggle, and called for women in Europe to partner with Burmese women in one-to-one relationships to provide practical assistance.
