Companies are responding to pressure to increase the proportion of women in senior management positions, but the pace is still too slow. Women account for only some 13% of company board members in Europe, and according to Viviane Reding, European Commission Vice-President, that figure has risen only 0.5 of a percentage point over the past year. The pressure must be maintained on companies to improve, with the threat of quotas for boardroom membership turning out to be an effective wake-up call to corporate chiefs. But at the same time, women need to become more assertive in pursuing a business career. Companies can help them by creating career paths more suited to their needs, such as offering more flexible working practices, and trying to promote women from early on in their careers.
