Scalable climate action

The Women4ClimateAction Daring Circle promotes initiatives and solutions empowering women to lead actions against climate change and accelerate the transition to a greener economy, whilst raising awareness about the ways in which gender and climate intersect.

Climate change has differentiated and disproportionate negative effects on women, who make up 80% of climate refugees, for example. However, our focus should not be on women and other disadvantaged groups as climate victims. On the contrary, their perspectives, skills and vision are crucial to drive progress and implement successful adaptation and mitigation strategies to tackle climate change. At the same time, a comprehensive transition to a greener economy is an opportunity to accelerate progress towards gender equality and economic empowerment for everyone.

Through a combination of scenario analysis, research, benchmarks of existing initiatives and expert consultation, the Daring Circle highlights best practices and identifies transformative innovations to advance women’s leadership and climate action simultaneously. We work with a board network of partners to inform and scale cross-sectorial and industry-specific initiatives to achieve these goals.

At the eve of the 2019 G20 summit and in the context of the Women’s Forum Call to the G20, we launched the Charter for Engagement: Women leading climate action, as the first pillar in building a gender-responsive approach to address climate change. The Charter outlines 5 key goals to promote gender-responsive climate action and engage public authorities, private sector organizations and citizens in a collective effort whilst providing specific commitments that each group can implement. The Charter has gathered over 500 signatures, including from CEOs of major firms, mayors and civil society leaders worldwide. The Women’s Forum is committed to growing the number of signatories to the Charter and supporting its implementation through case studies and useful tools.

The Daring Circle is led by BNP Paribas, in collaboration with Bouygues, Colas, Engie, and Microsoft as Global Partners. The Circle is supported by KPMG as Knowledge Partner, with contributions from CARE France, ClimateSeed, Ministère de la transition écologique, OECD, R20, SEforAll, Société pour l’encouragement de l’industrie nationale, and Syntec Numérique ; and HEC as Academic Partner.
